Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member faculties. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.


Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Explain the basic aspects of virology with the emphasis on viruses in animals
2. Explain the basic aspects of virology with the emphasis on viruses in animals
3. Plan experimental in vivo and in vitro virological experiments
4. Understand the basics of vaccines and veterinary vaccinology
5. Be able to critically read peer-reviewed literature on animal viruses


Content
The course covers topics in virological taxonomy, virus replication, classical and state of the art diagnostic methods, virus evolution and phylogeny, pathogenesis and virus interaction with the host including principles and use of vaccines and insights into zoonotic aspects of viruses. Emphasis is placed on virus infections of animals. Human virology is only briefly described.


Participants
PhD students on projects involving virological studies. Its required that the participants have a general understanding of biology, but not necessarily in veterinary or human medicine

The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:
- Immunology and Infectious Diseases
- Molecular Mechanisms of Disease
- Veterinary and Animal Health Sciences

Form
Four different learning approaches will be used where the students:
1) reading (preparation before the course)
2) listening (presentations by peers, teachers or guest speakers)
3) thinking and discussion (group work)
4) dissemination (oral presentations).
