Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Understand and apply conventions for medical writing as well as the structure and content of a scientific manuscript 2. Develop a structured approach to manuscript writing 3. Avoid pitfalls in the writing process 4. Navigate confidently through the submission and review process 5. Understand the editorial process at a peer-reviewed journal Content Publishing manuscripts in international peer-reviewed journals is paramount to a successful academic career. However, writing the first manuscript is typically a confusing and time-consuming process, and developing tools to understand and optimize the process is crucial. This course aims to transform your manuscript writing into an effective process by managing pitfalls and focusing on the essentials, and to help you go from spending weeks or months on writing articles to ideally using a couple of days. Focus will be on selecting the relevant content, structuring the manuscript, reading and complying with author guidelines, selecting an appropriate journal, and understanding the review process. An Editor-in-Chief from a scientific journal within surgery will provide insight into the manuscript-to-publication process viewed from the Editor's chair as well as advice on the role of the reviewer. Participants The target group consists of PhD students within the health and medical sciences, primarily but not restricted to surgical specialities, and with a limited experience of manuscript writing. If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
