Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.
The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Perform a peer review of a scientific paper using a systematic approach
2. Communicate the review to the editor and author
3. Critically discuss the ethics and limitations of peer review
Knowledge: Participants will understand the rationale for the peer review, gain knowledge on different aspects of the peer review process, and identify key issues in reviewing a paper.
Skills: Participants will be able to apply a systematic approach to peer reviewing, review a paper and communicate their review appropriately, and analyze and relate their knowledge on the peer review to their own projects and papers.
Competencies: Participants will be able to perform a peer review and assess others’ works, reflect on the peer review process, discuss the limitations of the peer review and put the peer review into perspective.
Content
Introduction to the peer review process and the rationale for peer review. Evidence for peer review and issues concerning for example bias, blinding and transparency, and conflicts of interests. Going “behind” the paper: evaluating the research question, originality, theoretical framework and presentation. A systematic approach to reviewing the core of the paper: the abstract, the introduction, the material and methods, the discussion and conclusion. A brief introduction to common statistical errors and pitfalls. Communicating the review constructively. Special considerations regarding qualitative research, the systematic review and guidelines such as CONSORT. Perspectives on peer review: the post-publication peer review and the significance of peer review to the public.
Participants
The course is intended for PhD-students engaged in clinical research and in the mid to last stages of their project. Participants are expected to have some experience with writing a scientific paper.

Lectures, discussions, group work, written assignment, oral presentations, and hands-on exercises.
The course consists of two 8-hour course days with an interim written assignment (10 hours).
Students are encouraged to bring a laptop.

Expected frequency
Two times per year (Spring and Fall semester).
Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules.
Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment.
Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
