Aim and content This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Define the key message of their presentation 2. Tailor their presentation to a specific audience 3. Structure the presentation in an engaging way 4. Build effective slides to support the arguments 5. Master techniques to maintain a calm, controlled voice and communicative body language Content How many boring research presentations have you sat through? Presentations where the message was unclear, and you had a hard time staying focused… Our society relies on researchers to find solutions. But essential research is often not communicated in ways which are appropriate for the audience. That’s why we run this course. With simple techniques, we will teach you how to tailor your message to be relevant for your specific audience. You will learn how to conduct an audience analysis so that you can land your message with the people in front of you. You’ll learn how to frame your message to make it beneficial for listeners. We’ll look into slide design; what to do, and what NOT to do. We’ll show you how to structure your presentation, so that the audience will listen until the very last word. And we will practise how to use a calm, controlled voice and communicative body language. The theoretical foundation of this course is built on the work of the late Greek philosophers Aristotle and Marcus Tullius Cicero, but also references more recent researchers such as Alan Houston Monroe and James C. McCroskey. During the course, we will cover the following topics: • Audience analysis: What you need to know about your audience • Problem statement: Defining the problem you want to solve for your audience • Key message: Learning how to turn complex research into a clear statement • Eliciting trust: Learning how to make the audience believe in you • Storytelling: Using narrative to engage your audience • And finally, the art of designing supportive slides. Participants This course is tailored to PhD students who want to improve their presentation skills. No specific prior qualifications are required. Relevant graduate programmes The course is relevant for PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: - Public Health and Epidemiology - All graduate programmes Language The course is taught in English. The teachers, however, are Danish, so if no participants require the sessions to be in English, then we’ll talk Danish instead. Form We combine lectures with group work, discussions, and peer-to-peer feedback presentations.
