Aim and content

1. The course is mandatory for all new PhD students at SUND from 2025. All other applicants will get a rejection.

2. It is highly recommended to complete the course within the first 1-2 months of the PhD studies. All PhD students at SUND must complete the course within the first 6 months of their PhD studies.

2. Please note that you will be charged a course fee, if you do not cancel your seat on time. Participants with less than 80% attendance cannot pass the course and will be charged an amount equal to the course fee for external participants. Learning objectives
A PhD student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. create a Personal Develop Plan (PDP), including career goals
2. map current competences and plan competence development
3. collaborate with supervisors and co-manage supervisory relationships
4. maintain work-life balance and establish productive work habits
5. communicate their research to a wider audience
6. provide and receive feedback
7. apply tools to start the writing process
8. identify risks and stakeholders in their research projects
9. take charge of their PhD studies


Content
The aim of this course is to introduce you to your new role as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and to offer you insights and tools to manage your project, research education, work-life balance, and the collaboration with your supervisor(s). Themes covered in the course are:
• Planning your competence development
• Project leadership
• Writing process and giving and receiving feedback
• Collaboration with supervisors
• Research communication
• Motivation and work-life balance


Participants
PhD students from KU SUND enrolled within the past 6 months from the course date.

To gain must from the course, the Graduate School recommends PhD students to complete the course within the first 1-2 months. The course is mandatory for all new PhD students at SUND from January 2025, and it will be a requirement to complete the course within the first 6 months.

Form
During the 3-day course, we alternate between short lectures, discussions, and exercises. Participants will work on their own Personal Development Plan (PDP) during the course. The PDP is a document that participants develop from a template, and it reflects the sessions and Learning Objectives of the course.

The requirements for passing and receiving credits for this course are active participation throughout the three course days and minimum 80% attendance.
