Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.
The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Understand basic concepts related to extrusion-based 3D-printing, primarily fused deposition modeling (FDM).
2. Carry out simple 3D-print tasks using consumer-grade FDM 3D-printers.
3. Analyze failures in FDM 3D-printing to optimize printing processes.
Knowledge: Participants will understand how extrusion-based 3D-printing works, gain knowledge of preprocessing steps, compare different 3D-printing material properties, and identify key issues related to failed or suboptimal 3D-print products. Participants will be able to put 3D-printing into a clinical context.
Skills: Participants will be able to make simple 3D-models in computer-aided design software, process and prepare 3D-printable files for printing including slicing, and analyze and optimize 3D-printing processes and products.
Competencies: Participants will be able carry out simple 3D-print tasks using consumer-grade, extrusion-based 3D-printers and optimize 3D-printing processes.
Content
Introduction to 3D-printing with a focus on extrusion-based printing (fused deposition modeling). Understanding different 3D-printing technologies, materials and use cases. Creating and modifying simple 3D-models in computer-aided design (CAD) software. Understanding different 3D-print file formats. Using software to prepare models for 3D-printing (slicing) including hands-on experiments related to print materials, support/scaffolding. Perspectives on the clinical use of 3D-printing in medicine and surgery.
Participants
The course is intended for PhD students at all stages of their projects. Participants are expected to have basic IT skills.

Danish/English if required by non-Danish participants.
Form
Lectures, hands-on experiments and exercises, group work, oral presentation, discussion.
There will be a homework assignment (approx. 12 hours) in the interim period.
3D-printers and computers with necessary software will be available at the course facility. For the homework assignment, participants will be required to install freeware on their PC/mac.
