Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member faculties. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course:

Knowledge
1. Define invasion mechanisms in fish parasites
2. Describe the anatomy and physiology of parasitic pathogens in fish
3. Describe immune evasion mechanisms of fish parasites
4. Know the immune pathways elicited by parasites in fish
5. Define diagnostic principles in fish parasitology

Skills
1. Isolate parasites from fish and fish organs
2. Produce diagnostic slides of parasites in fish
3. Identify fish parasites based on simple diagnostic tests
4. Perform a molecular identification of fish parasites
5. Produce histological sections of infected fish organs
6. Measure the immune status of fish infected by parasites

Competences
7. Evaluate factors eliciting parasitic diseases in fish
8. Evaluate immune factors associated with parasite infections in fish
9. Assess immune-prophylactic strategies for disease control
10. Develop management and control strategies for wild and cultured fish
11. Evaluate interactions between environment and fish health

Content
The course is a follow up on the PhD course “Fish Diseases I”. It will build on basic knowledge and skills obtained in course I. It has a duration of one week in the month of August. It employs a problem based approach. Following a basic introduction to basic definitions and concepts related to parasitic pathogens in fish the students will gain practical laboratory experience with regard to fish handling and examination. Focus will be on isolation of parasites. The students will be able to recover samples from diseased fish, perform diagnostic tests by application of microscopical and molecular techniques. The participants will prepare samples for histology and immunological investigations. The students will work in teams and solve specific health problems in fish.

The proportion of theory and practical exercises is 50:50. The theoretical part includes lectures, seminars, group discussions and student presentations concerning specific fish disease situations. The practical part comprises exercises including recovery and isolation of fish parasites, sampling of organs, preparations of slides for microscopical diagnosis, preparation of samples for histology, extraction of DNA and performing PCR, qPCR and sequences analyses. The student will work in teams elucidating a specific problem and by use of the acquired skills they will be able to present a diagnosis and suggest one or more control strategies to solve the problem. At the end of the course the students will present a written report and give an oral presentation of their work.

Participants
PhD students, postdocs and others with interest in ecology, marine biology, freshwater biology, fish biology, fisheries, aquaculture and experimental fish research.

Relevance to graduate programmes
The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:
- All graduate programmes

Language
English

Form
Lectures, seminars, exercises, group work, poster presentations. In addition, the students must select a relevant topic and write a report. It should be handed in (uploaded) less than 14 days after the practical course. It will be evaluated by the course leaders (internal censorship) and if approved the student will receive the diploma.
