Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Learning objectives
3D-printing is increasingly used in different areas including in medicine for fast prototyping for example of medical devices. In this course, we will introduce course participants on how to prepare, plan and execute simple 3D-printing using fused deposition modeling technology (i.e., inexpensive commercially available 3D-printers).

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

1.Understand basic concepts related to extrusion-based 3D-printing, primarily fused deposition modeling (FDM).
2.Carry out simple 3D-print tasks using consumer-grade FDM 3D-printers.
3.Analyze failures in FDM 3D-printing to optimize printing processes.

Knowledge: Participants will understand how extrusion-based 3D-printing works, gain knowledge of preprocessing steps, compare different 3D-printing material properties, and identify key issues related to failed or suboptimal 3D-print products. Participants will be able to put 3D-printing into a clinical context.

Skills: Participants will be able to make simple 3D-models in computer-aided design software, process and prepare 3D-printable files for printing including slicing, and analyze and optimize 3D-printing processes and products.

Competencies: Participants will be able carry out simple 3D-print tasks using consumer-grade, extrusion-based 3D-printers and optimize 3D-printing processes.

Content
Introduction to 3D-printing with a focus on extrusion-based printing (fused deposition modeling). Understanding different 3D-printing technologies, materials and use cases. Creating and modifying simple 3D-models in computer-aided design (CAD) software. Understanding different 3D-print file formats. Using software to prepare models for 3D-printing (slicing) including hands-on experiments related to print materials, support/scaffolding. Perspectives on the clinical use of 3D-printing in medicine and surgery.

Participants
The course is intended for PhD students at all stages of their projects. Participants are expected to have basic IT skills.

Relevance to graduate programmes
The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:

All graduate programmes

Language
Danish/English if required by non-Danish participants.

Form
Lectures, hands-on experiments and exercises, group work, oral presentation, discussion.
There will be a homework assignment (approx. 12 hours) in the interim period where the student will be able to work on their own 3D-print model design.
3D-printers and computers with necessary software will be available at the course facility. For the homework assignment, participants will be required to install freeware on their PC/mac.

Dates
23., 24., 25., 26 September and 3 October 2025 from 8:30-12:30.
Please reserve time to prepare the interim homework assignment between September 26th and October 3rd.

Course location
Rigshospitalet, Ole Maaløes Vej 26, opg. 76, afsnit 7651

Registration
Please register before 20. August 2025.

Expected frequency
If the course is recurrent and held at specific times each year, or you already know when the course is scheduled to be held again, you can state it here.

Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules.
Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment.

Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
