Enrolment guidelines
This is a specialised course. This means that 80% of the seats are reserved to PhD students enrolled at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH and 20% og the seats are reserved to PhD students from other Danish Universities/faculties (except CBS).

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member faculties. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.

Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Explain the basic life cycle of viruses with an emphasis on Influenza A viruses
2. Perform basic molecular biology and virology techniques
3. Plan experiments to test the effect of specific viral mutations on viral replication and pathogenesis
4. Critically read and present peer-reviewed literature on animal and human viruses

Content
The PhD course will cover both theoretical background on the basic viral life cycle as well as hands-on experimental work where students will learn basic techniques of molecular biology and virology.
Both theoretical and experimental work will predominantly focus on influenza A viruses, but the general knowledge as well as many of the techniques can be applied to other viruses as well.
In addition, students will work through previously distributed peer-reviewed papers which they will present in a short presentation.

Participants
PhD students on projects involving virological studies. The participants should have a general understanding of biology, but no previous virological knowledge is required.

Relevance to graduate programmes
The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH:
- Immunology and Infectious Diseases
- Molecular Microbiology and infection
- Veterinary and Animal Health Sciences

Language
English

Form
The course will involve lectures, practical lab work in small groups, and paper/data presentations by the students.

Seats to PhD students from other Danish universities will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and according to the applicable rules.
Applications from other participants will be considered after the last day of enrolment.

Note: All applicants are asked to submit invoice details in case of no-show, late cancellation or obligation to pay the course fee (typically non-PhD students). If you are a PhD student, your participation in the course must be in agreement with your principal supervisor.
