Scientific Project Planning and Management 1.

A Ph.D. is no longer just a Ph.D. It is increasingly a complete preparation for professional life, whether that is inside or outside science. Demands placed on the Ph.D. candidates include expectations that they manage their Ph.D. as a project. This course, intended for Ph.D. candidates during their first 6 months, introduces participants to the toolbox they need to get their Ph.D. on track.

After this course participants will know the basics of how to plan and manage a project, and can expect to be able to organize themselves effectively and communicate more assertively.

The main topic areas covered are:

Project planning (You learn to apply these tools directly to your own project during the course)
Managing and delivering a research project:
    Defining goals and sub-goals
    Setting milestones
Basics of planning (building a short timeline, e.g. for a month, or to the next milestone)
Identifying risks that can negatively impact the project and developing ways to deal with them
identifying and managing expectations on the project

Scientific interactions and collaboration
    Using collaborative tools appropriately
Handling expectations and agreements with collaborators

Research / Career Development

How to use the half-year report to enhance your progress
What support can you expect from my supervisor
How to get help from other colleagues

Time Management
Helpful tools to prioritise your tasks and make better use of your time
How to deal with interruptions and distractions that impede progress

Communication skills (These are some practical skills that support the other topics in this course)
