Aim and content
Learning objectives
This course is aimed at Ph.D. students working in the field of ‘human skeletal muscle’.

By the end of this course, the students should be able to design a sound scientific study to elucidate new mechanisms in the adaptation of human skeletal muscle. The students should be able to justify and defend the study design.

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:

a. To understand the difference between young and ageing skeletal muscle in terms of its potential to adapt to various exercise stimuli.
b. To choose analysis methods that are suitable for testing the study hypotheses.
c. To evaluate the merit of published articles in this field by acquiring an appreciation of the strengths and limitations of the design and analysis methods employed.

Content
Differences in response to exercise training between young and old will be studied. Within this context, the three main areas covered will include: changing muscle fibre size, satellite cells, and related signalling pathways. Each teacher will provide a theory talk and a method talk.
