Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
a. Knowledge: Participants will gain a better understanding of interdisciplinarity and science communication in theory and practice. The course will enhance the PhD student’s understanding of these topics through critical reflection and discussion of the central concepts and practical issues in interdisciplinary and science communication research. This will be accomplished by relating these issues to current and historical cases, including the PhD student’s own project and the current academic context.
b. Skills: The PhD student will become better at identifying and analysing both central problems and possible solutions related to science communication and interdisciplinarity.
c. Competencies: Participation in the course provides a basic level of practical experience in how to apply these insights and understandings to best communicate across disciplines and from an interdisciplinary position.
Content
The topics covered in the course curriculum are as follows:
• The concept of interdisciplinarity (uses, definitions, controversies: what does the literature say?). Arguments for and against interdisciplinarity: barriers and benefits of interdisciplinary scholarship.
• How to manage an interdisciplinary PhD/academic career/research project? (based on both literature, e.g. Lyall et al. 2011, and students’ own experiences and challenges).
• The role of science communication in past and current academia, what to be aware of, and how to look at interdisciplinarity as communicative practice; and how does this relate to your project?
• Training of the student’s awareness and skill at interdisciplinarity and science communication, including cases and exercises related to the students’ work that explores the issues and challenges of interdisciplinarity and science communication (both between researches and between researcher and public); all students get the opportunity to put the exercises into practice by creating and publishing (optional) a blogpost on Medical Museion’s website (www.museion.ku.dk; the blog has more than 200 subscribers).
