Aim and content
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrolment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School). Special rules apply for research year students enrolled at Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Learning objectives
• To prepare participants to respond suitably to the examiners’ questions in the PhD Viva
• To give participants an insight into what questions will be asked
• To equip participants with Discussion skills
• To alert participants to potentially problematic areas
• To draw participants’ attention to all aspects that could influence their Viva performance

Questions: those to ask yourself, your supervisor and your colleagues long before the actual Viva, for example: How do you respond to criticism; Do the examiners know/like each other; What would you do differently if you were to repeat your research; and, most importantly, How have you contributed to the world of research? We’ll also look at how to answer succinctly; how to handle difficult questions; how to agree and disagree; how to be courteous but assertive; how to give your voice attitude; what to do if you don’t understand what’s been said; and, just in case things go wrong, some language lifesavers.

PhD students nearing their PhD defence

Face-to-face classroom tuition and intensive question and answer group practice culminating in participants responding to questions related to their PhD thesis posed by “mock” examiners.
Between Day 1 and Day 2, participants are expected to prepare questions on their own thesis for use in a Question-Answer session on the second course day.
