Aim and content This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at graduate schools in the other Nordic countries. All other participants must pay the course fee. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from Nordic countries. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list. Learning objectives The purpose of the course is to provide an introduction to modern methods in epidemiology as used in medical research and based on biostatistics. On conclusion of the course the participants should be able to read and understand modern epidemiological methods and design and analyse standard studies. Content The course covers several study designs (cohort studies, case-control studies), statistical regression model (logistic, Poisson, Cox), and methods to dealing with confounding (stratification, adjustment, standardization, weighting, matching) commonly used in epidemiology. Concepts and the use of statistical models are illustrated using examples drawn from medical research. Lecture notes and supplementary SAS- and R-demos will be available from the course webpage. Participants Ph.D. students and others interested in epidemiologic research in medicine. Having completed the course in Basic Statistics is advantageous. Max. 25 participants Relevance to graduate programmes The course is relevant to PhD students from the following graduate programmes at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH: Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Cardiovascular Research Clinical Research Language Danish or English. Form The course contains a mixture of lectures, exercise classes (including computer practicals), and discussion of a scientific article. You are supposed to bring your own laptop with the statistical software you wish to use installed. Statistical Software The recommended software for the course are: -the R software (version 4.0.0 and above) which is freely available at https://www.r-project.org/. We also recommend the use of an IDE such as R-studio, freely available at https://www.rstudio.com/, to have a nice user-interface for working with R. Students not familiar with the R software should consider following, a few weeks before the course starts, the e-course (http://r.sund.ku.dk/) for medical PhD students developed by Susanne Rosthøj from the Section of Biostatistics or read the tutorial “Impatient R” (http://www.burns-stat.com/documents/tutorials/impatient-r/). -or the SAS software. Participants who wish to use other software are free to do so. They are however expected to be autonomous, as the teachers may not be able to answer technical questions (e.g. about coding) for software other than R/SAS.
