Aim and content
This course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD Students from NorDoc member universities. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at a Danish university, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. This also applies to PhD students from NorDoc member universities. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to applicants on the waiting list.
Learning objectives
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
Knowledge
1. understand interpretive epistemology in qualitative research, identify empirical versus analytical objectives, and describe the central characteristics and processes of a qualitative research project
Skills
2. conceptualize and plan qualitative research, including the tools used to produce data
3. apply central quality criteria in qualitative research, including the importance of pre-understanding, reflexivity, transparency, the role of context, access to the field and data, and to discuss these concepts in relation to specific research projects
Competences
4. critically reflect on the process of producing qualitative data
5. evaluate ethically sound research conduct and academic integrity in qualitative research
6. apply a range of selected analytical approaches to qualitative data, and discuss the interaction between data and social theory
7. construct different theoretical positions and perspectives relevant for qualitative research and develop the theoretical potential of her/his own studies
Content
This PhD course runs over five days in class, a week of individual study and additional four days in class. The course aims to provide PhD students with a solid background for managing the different stages and the progression of qualitative studies from idea (research questions) to analysis and write-up. Participants are supported in how to strengthen methodological, theoretical and analytical approaches of their research through lectures, student presentations, and discussions with lecturers and other course participants, group sessions and through home assignments. Lectures, student preparations and exercises will focus on conceptualization and methodological, theoretical and analytical perspectives central to qualitative research with specific focus on international and global health challenges. Particularly important are the workshop sessions in which we focus on participants’ individual projects.
Participants
The course is targeted students at any stage of qualitative research within public or global health research, either a qualitative component of a PhD project or a PhD project that is entirely qualitative. Students should preferable have prior experience with the basic principles of qualitative research.
