Content
AI can be a tremendous help, both when writing and as a sparring partner, but does your work seem generic; can you retain authenticity when you talk about it?
Does the way you talk to your peers about your research match the way it is written? Is there disparity between the clarity and fluency of what is written and the way you talk about it? Do you understand the grammar, the vocabulary choices and the punctuation in your paper? Can you replicate those points unaided? Can you speak fluently about your work? Can you get your points across in a group discussion? Can you successfully navigate tricky situations and disagreements? Do you need some practice and a bit more confidence?
In a relaxed environment where it’s fine to make mistakes and even better to laugh at them, this course offers you the opportunity to gather and practise the skills you need to write and talk confidently and authentically about your work.
Focus is on understanding the rationale behind academic writing; how to achieve precise, concise and accurate writing; how to talk about your research and actively listen to others’; how to agree and disagree; how to express different strengths of claim, both when you write and when you talk; and how to speculate and hypothesise about your findings, taking into consideration their value and implications.
Further focus is on the structure of the Abstract, Introduction and Discussion sections—touching on the Methods and Results. Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation will all be considered regarding the writing. For the talking part, focus is on discussion techniques—how to fully participate in group discussions; the motivation for your research; the justification for your choice of methodology, along with the strengths and limitations; on elaboration of the results; and on how to speculate and hypothesise about your findings, taking into consideration their value and implications. There will also be guided group discussions about relevant topical issues.
Participants will receive individual, detailed feedback and correction of their written work after each training session as well as correction of the submitted abstract/introduction submitted to the teacher before the course.
Participants
PhD researchers wishing to publish their work in reputable English-language journals and who also wish to discuss their work in small professional groups. The ability to speak English at an intermediate level, as a minimum, is a requirement. The course is designed for non-native English speakers.
