Enrolment guidelines
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.
Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.
The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Critically evaluate, communicate, and defend methodological decisions related to research design, sampling, information power, data generation, and analysis in their own qualitative research.
• Critically reflect on and articulate the role of researcher reflexivity and positionality and assess their implications for the production, interpretation, and representation of qualitative knowledge.
• Critically assess the strengths, limitations, and quality of their own qualitative research using methodological principles and meta-criteria rather than the mechanistic application of reporting guidelines and checklists.
• Construct well-reasoned responses to methodological critiques and reviewer comments, including critiques grounded in methodological assumptions that differ from those underpinning qualitative inquiry.
Content
A central focus of the course is the alignment between research questions, philosophical assumptions, research design, methods of data generation and analysis, and knowledge claims. Participants will engage with key methodological and epistemological issues and develop competencies in articulating and justifying the choices that underpin their own research projects.
Through lectures, workshops, and discussions of participants’ ongoing PhD studies, the course addresses topics such as the philosophical positioning of qualitative studies, methodological coherence, sampling strategies and information power, methodological strengths and limitations, reflexivity and researcher positioning, theory development, and innovative forms of data generation, representation and dissemination of qualitative findings. Participants will also work with strategies for responding to methodological critique.
Specific topics covered include:
• Epistemological and ontological positioning
• Managing and reporting researcher pre-understandings
• Considerations of information power and saturation
• Multimodal and creative methods in securing rich data
• Strategies for strengthening the transferability and generalizability
• Roles, contributions, and authorship in qualitative research collaborations
• Formulating rebuttals and responses to reviewer comments
Participants
Participants are PhD students and other postgraduate researchers. Participants are expected to have identified, and preferably initiated, at least one qualitative study as part of their PhD project. The course aims to strengthen participants’ ability to critically reflect on, communicate, and defend methodological choices in qualitative health research.
This course is not intended as an introduction to qualitative research methods. Students with no or only limited prior experience in qualitative research are encouraged to enrol in “Introduction to Qualitative Methods in Health Sciences.”
