Enrolment guidelines
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.

Purpose of the workshop
To strengthen PhD students’ ability to present their research clearly, engagingly and in a targeted manner – both orally and visually – to a range of academic and non-academic audiences.

Learning objectives
Students who have met the objectives of the course will be able to:
1. Strategically plan the oral communication of their PhD to support their future career and potentially increase their impact in society
2. Know and use the basic communication guidelines for how to orally present their research clearly and effectively to potential collaborators and mixed, non-specialist audiences
3. Apply classical rhetorical principles and journalistic techniques in the oral research presentation
4. Deliver a professional and engaging five-minute oral presentation of their PhD supported by a visual presentation that enhances the oral messages.

Content
This hands-on workshop will equip final-stage PhD students with skills to orally communicate their research clearly and engagingly to target groups beyond their own professional background. By developing strategic and practical communication skills, participants prepare themselves for a successful next career step.

Participants will leave the course with a ready-to-use five-minute oral presentation, summarising their PhD conclusions and core story, including a visual showcase in PowerPoint or a similar application. The presentation will be suitable for professional networking and cross-disciplinary collaboration, including media engagement.

The course combines short instructor-led introductions with practical exercises, allowing learning by doing individually and in collaboration with peers. All taking place in a safe and creative learning environment.

Participants will gain insights into strategic communication, including stakeholder mapping. They will learn the principles for how to communicate effectively with key audiences such as potential collaborators, employers, funding agencies, and the media.

They will become introduced to - as well as practice - the fundamental communication guidelines, including body language and storytelling techniques, equipping them with versatile skills to present their research in a professional and engaging manner.

By the end of the course, participants will be ready to enter oral dialogue with relevant stakeholders and effectively present their research to advance their careers and maximise the societal impact of their work.

Participants complete a short questionnaire about their communication needs with questions such as:
• what is the topic of your PhD?
• with whom do you need to communicate about your research to move forward in your career?
• what is the potential societal impact of your research in the most positive future scenario?
• which specific target groups/stakeholders will need to know about research in your field for you and your peers to have societal impact?
• which outcome do you hope to get from the workshop?

Individual homework after first workshop day
Participants prepare the second version of their presentation
