Enrolment guidelines
This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH.

Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list.

The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee.


Learning objectives
A student meeting the objectives of the course will be able to:

1. Apply advanced AI prompting strategies, including well-structured multi-step prompts, to complex scientific writing tasks such as drafting and editing larger scientific texts, for example, scientific papers and funding proposals.
2. Use AI tools in the scientific reviewing process, such as responding efficiently to reviewer critiques and resubmitting their papers
3. AI-assist the synthesis of 3-4 published papers and other context materials into a cohesive PhD thesis or larger scientific work.
4. Demonstrate the ability to perfect scientific writing by integrating personalised feedback into their work, while rigorously maintaining academic integrity throughout engagement with AI-assisted writing tools.

Knowledge: Participants will gain advanced knowledge of multi-step prompting strategies across specialised tools and will acquire a thorough understanding of the data safety and academic integrity standards required during extensive AI engagement.

Skills: Participants will gain practical experience in using advanced AI methods for scientific writing tasks, ensuring high-quality outputs that align with academic standards. Specifically, they will develop skills to efficiently respond to reviewer feedback; synthesise multiple scientific papers into a coherent PhD thesis or grant application; challenge existing knowledge and develop new ideas; and level the playing field for non-native English-speaking scientists.

Competencies: Participants will develop the competence to strategically integrate AI into their broader research workflows and to leverage AI to assist with advanced scientific tasks while ensuring academic integrity.


Contents
This advanced online course is designed for PhD students and researchers already familiar with basic AI writing tools (preferably previous participation in the course ”Artificial intelligence-assisted scientific writing - tips, tools & ethics”) and is a hands-on, focused, 2x4-hour, online course with interim homework between the two course days.
The course teaches participants how to strategically integrate AI tools like ChatGPT and SciSpace into their academic workflows to optimise complex writing tasks ranging from grant proposals to thesis composition. By combining hands-on AI training with feedback, the curriculum aims to significantly boost overall research productivity, save time and help non-native English speakers achieve native-level fluency.

Key topics include:
• Comprehensive synthesis and reviewer rebuttals: Participants gain practical skills to synthesise multiple scientific papers into a coherent text, learn how to use AI to efficiently draft professional responses to reviewer feedback and rewrite sections for resubmissions.

• Workflow optimisation and productivity: The course will demonstrate how to automate time-consuming administrative and academic tasks such as drafting literature reviews, progress reports, and presentations to save time and improve publication readiness.

• Personalised skill development and language levelling: Participants will learn to refine their prompting techniques and sharpen their AI capabilities, allowing non-native English speakers to overcome language barriers and consistently meet academic writing standards.

As AI tools become more integral to academic research, those who adopt these innovations will maintain or even enhance their research competitiveness. Incorporating AI into academic writing processes enables individuals and research teams to remain agile and efficient, reducing time spent on routine writing tasks and allowing them to focus on core research activities.


Participants
The course is intended for PhD students engaged in healthcare research.
Participants are expected to have experience with scientific writing and have participated in the course “Artificial intelligence-assisted scientific writing - tips, tools & ethics”.
Participants will need access to a PC and, preferably, the ability/permission to download and install apps.

AI tool access: Free trial plans are available; tool upgrades typically include higher word limits, access to advanced features, priority support, and no usage limits. One-month subscriptions to premium versions of 4-5 AI tools, costing a total of 40 < Euro (DKK 300), are recommended but not obligatory and are not included in the course.

Form
Online (2x4 hours + approximately 16 hours of interim homework/preparation between course days) with a mix of presentations, practical exercises, group discussions and feedback on participants' prompting and writing. The participant’s webcam must be on during the course to confirm attendance.
The full course workload is expected to be 24 hours.
