Enrolment guidelines This is a generic course. This means that the course is reserved for PhD students at the Graduate School of Health and Medical Sciences at UCPH. Anyone can apply for the course, but if you are not a PhD student at the Graduate School, you will be placed on the waiting list until the enrollment deadline. After the enrollment deadline, available seats will be allocated to the waiting list. The course is free of charge for PhD students at Danish universities (except Copenhagen Business School), and for PhD students at NorDoc member faculties. All other participants must pay the course fee. Learning objectives A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Explain theory driven family focused and person-centred approaches. 2. Reflect on and apply person centred and people driven values to strengthen interprofessional clinical practice. 3. Identify and justify methodological choices, including strengths and limitations of family focused approaches across diverse and vulnerable families. 4. Select and argue for different qualitative and quantitative data sources, including patient and caregiver reported outcomes and people-driven research. 5. Present a concise, structured person-centred and family focused PhD study demonstrating cultural and personal sensitivity and interprofessional skills. Content The full workload of the course is expected to be 61 hours Preparation and homework • Each student submits a 1-page abstract of their Ph.D. study in the template (deadline: 12 May 2027 to Karin.Piil@regionh.dk) • During the course, the student will further develop, design and present their own family/person-focused PhD study • Each student is expected to do non-scheduled course activities for approximately 21 hours for the course and 40 hours (abstract, reading, qualifying own project). This 3 day PhD course introduces participants to the scientific foundations, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches underpinning person centred and family centred healthcare. The curriculum covers the core principles of person and family centred care, including dignity, respect, partnership, shared decision making, and relational ethics. The course introduces key theoretical frameworks, including the Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models, McCormack & McCance’s person centred care framework, family systems theory, and communication theories relevant to clinical encounters with families. The course emphasizes how person and family centred approaches influence clinical practice, interprofessional collaboration, and care quality.
